The oval was a stony flat play space for so many years. It was ideal for marching practice for the whole school in the 1950s and 60s but those stones were unforgiving on young hands and knees so turf was laid in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the school in 1971 and irrigation was installed so the grass could be watered regularly. For the Centenary celebrations the school students formed the digits of 100 on the oval, they sang the school song which had been especially written by music teacher Mr Thomasson and Deputy Principal Mr Bauer, performed a gymnastic display and played a special football match. Having grass on the oval meant soft ground for running on sports day and a more attractive view.
