Celebration Update May

Your invitation to the School Fete…
Please join with us on Saturday 22nd May (10am-7:30pm) for our School Fete with the Principal’s Welcome at 11am, along with “Welcome to Country” and a performance by students from our First Nations Families, culminating with fireworks at 6:30pm. There will be all the usual stalls, food and entertainment that we have come to enjoy at School Fetes.

In celebration of our anniversary year, come and see the 150th Anniversary stand next to the Books and Toys Stall. There will be a display of some of the memorabilia from our archives. You will be able to purchase a keepsake souvenir, sign an alumni guest book, place a bid on a framed copy of the anniversary artwork, and chat with the 150th Anniversary Committee. Enjoy the day being in your old school, meeting old friends and reminiscing!

ANZAC Day Service
Our ANZAC Day on Friday 23rd April was a beautiful sunny day, made a significant occasion as we were joined by some of our past alumni who have served in the armed forces. Kenneth Sandercoe (ne Sandercock) who turns 100 next month, and featured in last month’s newsletter for his contribution to the RAAF, made a great effort to be at the service. In talking with his daughter, Carolyn Sandercoe, we discovered the great family connection to our school. Her great grandfather Mr Charles Robert Morton was the Head Teacher at Yeronga State School from 1910-
1924, who inaugurated the 1916 ANZAC service at our school in the format that continues to this day. He was inspired to commemorate the occasion as his two sons went to war in 1915: Herbert Palmer Morton, a driver of horses who survived Gallipoli, while Captain Cecil Charles Morton (Kenneth’s Grandfather) served in 5th Field Artillery Brigade (awarded a Military Cross, 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal). What an amazing family, serving their country and our school, leaving a long-lasting contribution to our community. Lest we forget.

I’m looking forward to meeting you at the 150th Anniversary stand at the fete on Saturday 22nd May. Come and introduce yourself.

Yours in Celebration, Jennifer Bennett
